Preventative Dentistry

Prevention and early detection are critical for avoiding tooth decay and gum (periodontal) disease. Good home brushing and flossing habits, in addition to regular check-ups and visits can help preserve a healthy smile.

ROUTINE EXAMINATION

At your routine exam, we check for cavities, gum disease, and other diseases of the mouth, such as oral cancer.

DENTAL HYGIENE VISITS

Cleanings are an important part of every regular visit, and our hygienists are available to assist you with any questions or concerns you may have about your dental hygiene and maintenance of healthy teeth and gums.

SEALANTS

Dental sealants, which are usually applied to the chewing surface of teeth, act as a barrier against decay-causing bacteria. Sealants are most often recommended for children, and are applied to the back teeth (premolars and molars).

Cosmetic

BONDING

Bonding is a quick and esthetically pleasing way to modify and work with what you got. Composite resin is one material used to fill cavities, it is also capable of:

  • Filling in spaces making them visibly eliminated.

  • Matched to the colour of your natural teeth.

  • Discoloured teeth can be colour corrected with a thin layer

  • Fill in chips or broken areas

PORCELAIN VENEERS

Veneers are strong and very thin pieces of porcelain that are bonded to the teeth. Veneers can be used to cover teeth that are chipped, misshapen, or stained.

Whitening

IN OFFICE

Staining of teeth may be caused by smoking, damage, various foods and beverages such as coffee and tea, and wine, as well as by age. We offer various tooth whitening options, including in-office and at-home bleaching.  Whitening can help you feel better about your smile!

AT HOME

Using custom trays and a bleaching gel, you can safely whiten your teeth at home over a two-week period. With this method, custom-fit whitening trays are made for you and a whitening gel is provided. The trays are worn for 2-6 hours and your teeth are gradually whitened over a 2-week period.

Teeth may require additional whitening treatment in the future as teeth will stain or darken over time. If you smoke or drink heavily pigmented beverages such as tea, coffee, or red wine, you will need to repeat whitening more often to maintain results.

Implants

An artificial tooth and root replacement that is fixed in the mouth and resembles a natural tooth. When a tooth must be extracted due to damage or decay, a dental implant is the strongest and most long lasting restoration available.

Dental Implants are an option used for patients who want to replace missing teeth. A titanium post is placed into the bone of the jaw in the location of the missing teeth. An artificial tooth, such as a crown, can be secured to the implant. When many teeth are missing, dentures can be attached to the implants. With only a few implants, we can sometimes secure existing dentures to the implants and change a loose, uncomfortable one to a secure, well-fitting and comfortable denture.

  • Dental implants are made over a series of visits with one of our dentists and our in-office periodontist.

  • They are usually made of a combination of porcelain and titanium.

  • The root portion of the implant is inserted in the office; the tooth portion of the implant is made in a lab, based on an impression. The tooth portion is inserted later, after a healing period.

  • An implant is brushed and flossed just like a natural tooth.

Invisalign®

Invisalign® is an easy and effective way to straighten teeth and has been used to treat millions of patients worldwide. Invisalign® aligners are virtually invisible, allowing you to undergo orthodontic treatment without drawing attention to your teeth. This is particularly appealing to adults and teenagers who may feel self-conscious about wearing traditional braces. The first step is to meet with a dentist who will do an oral exam and a 3D scan of your teeth to determine if Invisalign® treatment is right for you. With the help of digital imaging technology, they will then create a personalized treatment plan. Once you accept the plan, your dentist will develop a series of clear aligners from your 3D scan. You will need to wear each of these aligners for two weeks, 20 hours a day, removing them only to eat meals and snacks. Nearly 90% of all patients are candidates for Invisalign® treatment and our dentists are very comfortable treating most patients using Invisalign® treatment. Book a consultation to learn if you are a candidate for Invisalign®!

Digital X-Rays

We are delighted to offer digital x-rays which provide many benefits to our patients, including:

  1. Safety – radiation is decreased by up to 80%

  2. Instant results – images appear immediately on a computer in the operatory

  3. Increased versatility – digital images allow us to “zoom in” to see greater detail at a high level of resolution

  4. Environmentally friendly – no chemicals used in the process and no lead waste as with conventional x-rays.

For Children

Kids are special and we make a special effort to make our office feel friendly and welcoming to children. Having had young children ourselves, we know that a dental office can be intimidating to little ones. To make visits more enjoyable for our youngest patients, we offer:

  • TV at chair-side: Our chairside entertainment is especially popular with our younger patients, who love watching cartoons during their appointments. Not surprisingly, we have found children to be more at ease during their visits since we introduced TV in every treatment room.

  • Experienced staff: Our staff is experienced in interacting with children – both clinically and outside the dental office. We understand that children are not simply smaller versions of adults, and we recognize that they need to be treated in a way that respects both their physical and emotional differences.

  • Prize Box: Kids are rewarded at the end of their dental visit with their choice of a prize from our giant tooth-shaped prize box.

  • Sedation: Some children may be more anxious than others during their dental visits. We have several options available for sedation that are safe and effective for children.

Sedation

Members of our staff are certified in sedation techniques. If you have anxiety about visiting the dentist, we have options to help make your visits to our office more relaxing and comfortable.

  • Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas)

  • Oral Sedation

  • IV Sedation (certified training)

Ask one of our dentists about what kind of sedation might be appropriate for you.

Crowns (Same-Day “Cerec”)

Crowns, also called "caps" are dental restorations that cover and protect damaged, cracked or broken teeth.

  • Crowns are often needed to strengthen a tooth after root canal treatment, or after a wide, large filling.

  • Crowns can be made of all porcelain or a combination of porcelain and metal.

  • Crowns are usually made in our own lab during a single appointment, based on a digital impression and 3D model that we make of your tooth. After your tooth is prepared to accommodate the restoration, a crown covers the entire remaining tooth above the gum line.

  • Crowns are strong and can last for many years with good care and regular hygiene visits. A crown is brushed and flossed just like a natural tooth.

Fillings

When a tooth needs to be repaired due to damage or decay (cavities), dental fillings are used to preserve, restore, and maintain natural teeth.

The material we use most often use is a white plastic paste material called “composite resin” that is bonded, cured, and hardened to a tooth-like texture.

Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics)

Root Canal treatment is usually required when there is an irreversible injury to the nerve of a tooth. This can be due to a large cavity that is present or due to trauma such as a fracture.

Once a tooth is injured, diseased, or cracked, it is sometimes possible to open the tooth and clean out the damaged tissue inside. Root canal treatment or “therapy” allows us to save a diseased tooth by removing the disease and bacteria from inside the tooth, filling it, and sealing it.

At Queen Street Dental Centre our endodontic specialist Dr. Pavel Cherkas provides this care using microscope technology and other specialized materials and techniques for the best possible result.

Gum Treatment (Periodontics)

Treatment provided by our Periodontal specialist, gum disease is an infection that affects the gums and bone, which can lead to tooth loss. Depending on the level of advancement, gum treatments may be required to reverse the effect of the disease. Prevention, of course, through regular cleanings and check-ups is the best way to prevent gum disease.

With our in-house periodontist, Dr. Phil Walton, a certified specialist in advanced gum treatment and the surgical placement of dental implants, our patients rarely need to go anywhere else for any of their dental needs.

Bridges

Also called a fixed partial denture, replaces missing teeth with artificial teeth.

  • Unlike a removable partial denture, a bridge cannot be removed.

  • A bridge is often made from a combination of metal and porcelain. Unlike implants, the artificial porcelain teeth are attached to the surrounding natural teeth to anchor them securely.

  • Bridges require special care when cleaning inside your mouth, as the areas between the teeth are more difficult to access than natural teeth or dental implants. This often requires special cleaning instruments at home, such as floss threaders.

Extractions and Oral Surgery

A severely damaged tooth may need to be removed (extracted). When a tooth must be removed due to damage or decay, we offer several options for restoring teeth, such as implants, bridges, and partial dentures.

Wisdom teeth often require extraction because there is not enough room for them to fit in the jaw. These impacted teeth are routinely removed in our office.

Teeth may also need to be removed to prepare for orthodontic treatment.

Microscope Technology

Surgical loupes with LED illumination, and the dental operating microscope we use have greatly enhanced our practice. High illumination and magnification optics significantly increase our ability to diagnose and carry out all aspects of dental treatment under high magnification.
