Dr. James Sugarman, Principal Dentist

Dr. James Sugarman graduated from the University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry in 1990 and went directly into private practice. Dr. Sugarman has worked at the Faculty of Dentistry in the Oral Research Clinic, and has been a clinical instructor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry and in the Dental Hygiene Department at George Brown College. Dr. Sugarman has additional training in sedation techniques and is able to provide various levels of conscious sedation. Dr. Sugarman enjoys devoting time to learn about new technologies in dentistry and implementing them to further the care of patients in the office. In his spare time, Dr. Sugarman enjoys travelling, running, playing golf, and spending time with his wife, Sara and three children.

Dr. Vickie Sugarman, Principal Dentist

Dr. Vickie Sugarman graduated with Honours from the University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry in 1991 where she won the Restorative Dentistry Award from the Academy of General Dentistry. She has worked as a clinical instructor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry and in both the dental hygiene and restorative dental hygiene programs at George Brown College.

Dr. Sugarman emigrated from the Ukraine in 1975 and is fluent in Russian. She loves to cook, exercise, is an avid reader and enjoys spending time with her husband and three children. Dr. Sugarman has traveled to Peru, Guatemala and Uganda as a volunteer to provide dentistry to remote and under-serviced communities.

Dr. Caroline Conway, Associate Dentist

Dr. Caroline Conway graduated with honours from the University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry (DDS). Throughout her time at U of T, she was involved in numerous outreach initiatives, and was recognized with awards for both academic achievement and community contributions. Following dental school, Dr. Conway pursued advanced dental training – she completed a residency at the McGill University Heath Centre, where she practiced hospital-based dentistry.

Dr. Conway enjoys all aspects of general dentistry, with a specific interest in digital dentistry, but her favourite part of being a dentist is getting to know her patients. She is certified in Invisalign, and is committed to keeping up with the latest advances in dentistry. Dr. Conway is an active member of the Ontario Dental Association, as well as several dental study clubs. She remains affiliated with the University of Toronto, where she teaches as a clinical instructor and volunteers her time with faculty committees.

When not at the dental office, you will probably find Dr. Conway spending time outdoors with friends and family, at a yoga class, or watching Jeopardy. She is an avid traveller and has a growing list of travel recommendations from her patients. Dr. Conway speaks English, French, and is currently learning Spanish.

Dr. Joseph Khawam, Associate Dentist

Dr. Joseph Khawam, known by his patients as “Dr. Joe”, obtained his Doctor of Dental Surgery in Europe and is licensed with the Royal College of Dental Surgeons in Ontario. He graduated top of his class and earned awards for outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements. 

Dr. Khawam is driven to provide excellent dental treatment, focusing on ensuring that patients feel very comfortable in his care. He believes in a comprehensive approach that extends beyond dentistry. 

Dr. Khawam enjoys spending his free time with friends, and is always looking for the next travel destination to visit. 

Dr. Mary Faheim, Associate Dentist

Dr. Mary Faheim, known to her patients as Dr. Mary, completed her undergraduate degree at McMaster University and went on to complete her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Mary has a strong passion for preventative dentistry and dental health education. She enjoys getting to know her patients and their individual needs, allowing her to provide comprehensive and patient - centred care. Her goal is to empower her patients and help them reach their perfect smile.

When she is not in the clinic, Dr. Mary enjoys travelling and spending time with family.

She is a member of Ontario Dental Association, Canadian Dental Association, and Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario.

Dr. Christopher Dawoud, Associate Dentist

Dr. Christopher Dawoud was born and raised Toronto, Ontario. He completed his undergraduate degree in Medical Sciences at Western University before leaving to New York City to study dentistry at NYU College of Dentistry. During his time at NYUCD, he accomplished an honours degree in Orofacial pain. During that time, he also participated in local and global outreach programs. After receiving his dental degree, Dr. Dawoud completed a post-graduate General Practice Residency at New York Presbyterian - Columbia University, where he also served as Chief Resident. During those two years, he received additional training in general dentistry and the management of medically compromised and special needs patients, with particular emphasis on surgical procedures. Throughout his dental training, he found ways to incorporate his love for community service, outreach, and treating those who have difficulty finding good, quality care.

He believes in being educational and providing solutions focusing on the preventative aspects of oral care. Dr. Dawoud’s training allows him to perform a vast range of dental procedures. He enjoys all aspects of dentistry and provides high-quality care in a calm and comfortable environment. He incorporates digital technology to provide comprehensive, comfortable, and current dental care for all his patients.

Dr. Dawoud is committed to his patients, treating each patient individually and understanding their needs to ensure he can deliver his best care.

Upon his return to Ontario, Dr. Dawoud has become a member of the RCDSO, the ODA, and the CDA. In his spare time Dr. Dawoud enjoys playing soccer, travelling, watching movies, and listening to new music.

Dr. Pavel Cherkas, Endodontist

Dr. Pavel Cherkas graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel where he also received M.Med.Sc. and PhD degrees in Neuroscience. Dr. Cherkas completed his M.Sc. in Endodontics at the University of Toronto and successfully passed his Royal College Fellowship Examinations.

Dr. Cherkas is an Assistant Professor of Oral Physiology and Endodontics at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry, focusing on the fields of endodontics, neurophysiology and orofacial pain.

Dr. Cherkas is active with various professional organizations. He is a member of the American Association of Endodontics and Canadian Academy of Endodontics, the Ontario Society of Endodontics, the International Association for the Study of Pain, and the Canadian Pain Society. He has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Endodontics, Journal of Chemical Neuroanatomy and the Journal of Orofacial Pain. He is also a reviewer and associate member of the Faculty of 1000 Medicine.

Dr. Cherkas has conducted pain research at several Universities worldwide such as Cambridge (UK), Leipzig (Germany) and Tokyo (Japan) and has published 16 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, a textbook chapter, a clinical guideline and many research abstracts. He has served as a Resident Member on the Regenerative Endodontics Committee of the American Association of Endodontics and presented over 40 lectures nationally and internationally on topics related to his expertise.

Dr. Philip M. Walton, Periodontist

Dr. Philip M. Walton earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Toronto where he received awards for his clinical and academic achievements. Prior to pursuit of his graduate dental studies, he completed externships at the University of Michigan and overseas at King's College London School of Medicine and Dentistry in London, England.

Dr. Walton completed his Master's of Medical Sciences degree in Periodontology at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Walton's training included advanced regenerative techniques and implant rehabilitation. Dr. Walton is a Fellow of the Royal College of Canada. At present he maintains the role of Associate in Dentistry as part of the Faculty of Dentistry at University of Toronto, where he participates in the clinical and didactic training of undergraduate dental students. Dr. Walton continues to maintain a strong affiliation to Harvard as a past clinical instructor, admissions committee member and active alumnus.

Dr. Walton continues to contribute significantly to philanthropic dental and community initiatives. He is also an active member of the American Academy of Periodontology, International Team for Implantology, the Ontario Dental Association and Canadian Dental Association.

Dr. Jason Goldberg, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon

Dr. Jason Goldberg obtained his Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of Toronto.  He graduated with distinction and received numerous awards for his academic achievements.  Dr. Goldberg continued his training at Yale New Haven Hospital in Connecticut where he completed his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery.  During his time at Yale, Dr. Goldberg received awards for his research in office-based anesthesia and has contributed multiple publications to the field.

Dr. Goldberg is licensed by the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario to practice oral and maxillofacial surgery and is an active member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Dr. Goldberg’s passion for oral and maxillofacial surgery began when he observed a surgery during his undergraduate training; he witnessed the profound effect an oral and maxillofacial procedure could have on a patient’s life and sought out the opportunity to have this positive effect on the lives of others.

In his free time, Dr. Goldberg enjoys hiking, tennis, playing music, and spending time with his friends and family.
